I first started painting during the late sixties choosing oils as my medium. Short of the art lessons received at school I am self taught, my excuse for all those paintings which leave a little to be desired. Rarely did I draw preferring the freedom that enabled the painting to develop as it progresses. Another technique I liked to use was to mix colours on the board itself. Although the technique gave the picture a rather lose and perhaps a rawness look, it captured an expression that other techniques could not. One such early painting example the "Magpie" is shown in my gallery.
I put my brushes to one side in 1976 my time fully occupied by romance. I picked them up again in 1991 this time using acrylics as the medium. Not long after I had an accident which lead once again to my brushes being packed away. They surfaced for a short while in 2001 providing a therapy to help me to cope with the disabilities resulting from my accident. A few months into 2001 my health deteriorated further. This resulted in loosing the conscious memory of painting skills learnt over past years and yet again the brushes were put away. I did for a while look to computer art to fill the space left behind, it could not.
In 2003 my wife took up water colour painting, this was an inspiration to me. Out came the brushes once more but with a renewed vigour. I have adopted a style which I call abstract realism; it is one that allows me the freedom to express but within a chosen boundary. In short I may choose to paint an elephant climbing a tree; however the elephant must look like an elephant and the tree a tree taking into account my personal abilities of course
My gallery contains a record of my paintings even those I would prefer not to show. As time goes by and new skills are acquired (hopefully) this will be reflected in those paintings. Unfortunately the quality of reproduction suffers when converting to a format and reasonable size suitable for internet viewing. Most of the paintings are of a size to large to be scanned by the equipment I own. The method used is to photograph them then download those photographs into the computer. I then resize them to a size suitable for internet viewing.
