Awaking

As the first rays of the morning sun peer through badly drawn curtains.
I am awoken by the dawn calling, stirring distance memories of lives gone by.
When I too, took part in celebrating the beginning of a new day.
Fighting back the temptation to bust into song, I glance towards my wife sleeping.
Slipping quietly by, as not to wake. I think of my son sleeping, now a grown man
Spirit free he fights the rat race, while coming to terms with his working life.

Quietly down the stair I creep soon to be faced by other family members.
These have four legs not two, yet they are family members all the same.
I am greeted by wagging tails and excited faces that shows their love, freely given.
After the usual fussing and morning greetings. Off into the garden we go.
Where waiting in anticipation, the fish swim slowly round their pond.
Their winter sleep now over, full of life and an appetite never ending they wait.

Food is the order of the day, unafraid the sparrows call in for their morning drink.
I pause to see how the ants are doing clearing away debris from recent storms.
Calls aloft, start the morning show of flying skills by house martins after food.
Strolling around the garden, I greet each flower while silently thanking them.
For the beauty of their floral display. My day complete before it starts.

What others tread under foot and give no time is what gives my life the fullness it is.
